Californication Season 5 Episode 4 - Waiting For The Miracle
Californication is the story of Hank Moody. Hank is a novelist who has recently moved to Los Angeles, which complicates his relationship with Karen, his ex-girlfriend, whom he still has feelings for and Becca, his 12-year-old daughter.
Episode Summary:
Hank receives an unwelcome surprise in the form of Carrie, ex-girlfriend and arsonist that he's forced to invite along when Karen and Becca show up to invite him to a dinner party. Stu, Marcy and Bates' talk of sexual proclivities leaves the Moodys searching for the nearest exit, but the party gets even more out of control when Carrie has a realization about Hank.
Hank awakes at Charlie’s to a text message from Carrie. She’s in town for business and wants to get together. Outside, Charlie is basking in the sun. Although he says he doesn’t want to see her, Hank begins singing her sexual praises, recalling the rare chemistry they shared. Another text arrives. She has a surprise for him, and Hank does not like surprises, especially from psychotic women who set his apartment on fire.
A minute or two later, there’s a knock at the door. Guess who! It’s Carrie, the ‘bunny-boiler’ (if you didn’t know, that’s a reference to Glenn Close’s crazy stalker character in Fatal Attraction), at Runkle’s doorstep to surprise Hank. Like any good stalker would, she tracked his iphone, a feature which she herself installed. She immediately fondles Hank and proposes they head to the bedroom (she said something way more colorful than that…).
Hank takes Carrie up on her offer, and does what he does best. In fact, she’s so pleased with his performance that she thinks he has ‘added 7 years to her life’. After telling him she is considering taking a job in LA, the doorbell rings. Like most typical Californication situations, the timing could not be worse – Karen and Becca are at the door, hoping Hank will accompany them on a family outing.
In flies Carrie, and Hank is reluctant to introduce her. The women, however – Becca included -seem to be completely comfortable with the chance meeting. Karen invites the ‘couple’ to her house for dinner to celebrate Richard’s new novel. Clearly Hank is not interested, but the women have spoken.
Back at Casa de Runkle, Lizzie is preparing Charlie for a blind date which she has set up. After inappropriately asking Lizzie to stay in and watch a movie, Charlie leaves Lizzie to her nanny duties and heads out into the wild for his date.
Karen & Richard, Stew & Marci, and Carrie & Hank are all sitting down to dinner. Clearly there will be fireworks, and immediately the conversation turns to sex. Carrie begins to sing Hank’s sexual praises, to which Richard counters with a remark about Karen’s ‘lioness’ nature. More lewd talk ensues, and tension between Hank and Richard is becoming palpable.
Charlie arrives at his date with a lovely older blonde. Conversation is stale, filled with awkward silences. After recognizing their lameness, the couple decides to spice up the content. Clearly there is juxtaposition between this evening and the one developing at Karen’s place. Charlie and his date are debating kindles Vs ipads, while the other crew is discussing vibrators Vs soundless devices.
Things progress well for Charlie, and he finds himself in bed with his blind date. Surprisingly, she admits to being a virgin and wants Charlie to be her first. After she convinces Charlie it is indeed what she wants to do, he is on board. They begin. But before you get too excited, remember this is Charlie Runkle. Like Seal Team Six, Charlie is in and gone in an instant. His date is completely deflated and shocked, and who could blame her? Hell of a first time…

Becca walks into the dinner party, having returned home from a date with Tyler, the antichrist. Hank hates the idea and the conversation turns ugly soon. While arguing with Karen over how best to change Becca’s mind, Carrie comes to the realization that Hank is indelibly tethered to Karen and his old life. She had hopes for them but now appears to be completely over them. She walks out in a huff and tramples on Hank’s good name (if it even is still good at this point), breaking the party up.
Later, Karen attempts to console Hank, who is hurt by hearing the truth from Carrie. He deserved all the things she said to him. Karen assures Hank that she is in love with Bates, and that it’s over between them, but Hank clearly always felt that, probably until now, his life with Karen and Becca would someday resume. The episode ends on this somber note.
